LG Washer Not Draining? Diagnose It in 5 Minutes

May 08, 20265 min read

Water sitting in the drum. A cycle that stopped halfway. An OE code blinking at you. When your LG washer not draining problem hits, the frustrating part isn't the water it's not knowing where to start.

Most guides give you the same generic list. This one works differently. Tell us what you're seeing and hearing, and we'll point you straight to the cause no guesswork.

Start Here: What Is Your Washer Actually Doing?

Before touching anything, run a spin-only cycle and pay attention. What happens during the drain phase tells you more than any error code.

You hear humming but water doesn't move. The pump motor is running but the impeller is jammed or damaged. This is mechanical, not a blockage. Skip straight to the pump section below.

Complete silence during the drain phase. The pump isn't receiving power or the motor has failed entirely. This one needs a technician.

Water drains slowly but never fully clears. A partial blockage filter, hose, or excess suds. Start with the filter.

OE code appeared once, washer seems fine now. Likely a one-off from an overloaded cycle or brief power fluctuation. Unplug for 5 minutes, restart, and monitor. If the LG washer not draining issue doesn't return within a few loads, you're probably fine.

Drains fine but stops mid-cycle. Check the door latch first. LG front-loaders won't complete a cycle if the door lock assembly isn't fully engaged it mimics a drain failure but isn't one.

The Real Causes of LG Washer Not Draining

Everyone knows about the filter. Here's what most guides skip:

The drain hose is inserted too deep. LG specifically states the hose should go no more than 6 inches into the standpipe. Deeper than that creates a siphon effect water drains, then gets pulled back into the drum, and the LG washer not draining OE code fires on every single cycle. It looks like a recurring fault but it's just an installation issue.

Wrong detergent or too much of it. HE washers are sensitive to suds. Excess foam slows drainage past the machine's time threshold and gets flagged as a drain error. If you've been generous with the detergent cap, this might be your entire problem.

The pump filter housing is cracked. Cleaning the filter fixes a clog. But if the housing itself is cracked or the seal is worn, water bypasses the filter path and drainage becomes inconsistent. This gets missed because the filter looks clean.

Coin trap debris on top-loaders. On some LG top-load models, there's a secondary trap that collects items the filter misses. If your top-loader has an LG washer not draining issue and the filter is clear, check for a coin trap near the agitator base.

Fix It: In Order of Likelihood

Step 1 Hard reset. Unplug for 5 full minutes not 30 seconds. This fully discharges the control board. Restart with a spin-only cycle. If the OE code clears and doesn't return within 2–3 loads, you're done.

Step 2 Clean the drain pump filter. Bottom front panel, small access door. Place a shallow container underneath there will be water. Pull the rubber drain hose first to release pressure, then twist the filter cap counterclockwise. Rinse under warm water, check inside the housing for stray items, reinstall firmly.

Technician tip: After reinstalling, run the spin cycle with the access panel still open and watch for drips around the filter cap. A slow drip means the cap isn't fully seated or the seal is worn fix it now before it becomes a flood.

Step 3 Fix the drain hose. Pull the washer out, check for kinks, and measure how far the hose goes into the standpipe. More than 6 inches pull it out. LG also recommends at least 4 inches of clearance between the back of the machine and the wall.

Step 4 Run an empty cycle to clear suds. No detergent, warm water, full cycle. If you see foam, excess suds have been causing your LG washer not draining issue all along. Run 2-3 more empty cycles until it clears, then use the correct HE detergent amount going forward.

Step 5 Inspect the pump. If Steps 1-4 didn't fix it and you're hearing humming without drainage, the pump impeller is the likely culprit. This is where things get more involved front panel removal, tub gasket, door assembly. If you're not comfortable with that, this is the point to call a tech.

When to Call a Professional

The filter, hose, and detergent fixes are genuinely doable at home no tools, under 30 minutes. Once you're into pump territory the calculus changes. Accessing the LG drain pump means removing the front panel, tub gasket, and door assembly. Done incorrectly, the gasket won't reseat properly and you'll have a slow leak after every cycle.

FAQ

My LG washer not draining problem only happens on certain cycles why?

Heavy cycles use more water and take longer to drain. If suds are slowing things down, the machine hits its time limit on bigger loads first. Reduce detergent and test on the affected cycle type.

The OE code cleared after a reset but came back two days later. Is the pump failing?

Not necessarily. A recurring LG washer not draining code that clears temporarily often points to the hose depth issue or a partially clogged filter. Check both before assuming pump failure.

Can I use my LG washer if it's not draining properly?

Better not to. Running cycles with water in the drum puts extra load on the pump motor and promotes mold growth quickly.

My LG top-load washer is not draining is the fix the same?

Mostly yes. Top-loaders also have a lid switch that prevents drainage if it's not sensing the lid as closed. Check that the lid clicks firmly shut before anything else.

How do I know if my LG washer drain pump needs replacing vs. just cleaning?

Humming with no water movement impeller likely jammed. No sound at all motor has failed and the pump needs replacing. A technician can confirm with a quick voltage test.
